Groveland Four' Posthumously Exonerated Over 70 Years After Being Wrongly Accused of Raping Woman,Upcomingnews

A gathering of four Black men blamed and sentenced for assaulting a white lady in 1949 have been post mortem excused, after 72 years. 

Ernest Thomas, Samuel Shepherd, Charles Greenlee and Walter Irvin — who came to be known as the "Groveland Four" — were cleared by Circuit Court Judge Heidi Davis in Lake County, Florida, on Monday, CNN revealed. The adjudicator excused the arraignments of Thomas and Shepherd and cleared Greenlee and Irvin's feelings, per CNN. 

While the four men have since kicked the bucket, their families praised the news on Monday. 

"For a considerable length of time the families have been living with this and going with this excursion hanging tight for now," State Attorney Bill Gladson said on Monday following the conference, per CNN.

Aaron Newson, who is a nephew of Thomas, said he and his family were "honored" to have Thomas cleared, as indicated by NPR. 

"We are honored. I trust that this is a beginning since part of individuals didn't get this chance. A great deal of families didn't get this chance. Perhaps they will," he said. "This country needs to meet up." 

The four men were blamed for assault by Norma Padgett, who was 17 at that point. Padgett, who is presently in her 80s, blamed the four people for stealing and assaulting her when she and her better half experienced vehicle inconvenience while passing through Groveland, Florida, in 1949, as per NBC News.
