— Rome According to the Italian authorities, the iconic green-eyed "Afghan Girl" from National Geographic magazine has arrived in Italy as part of the West's evacuation of Afghans following the Taliban's control of the nation. According to Premier Mario Draghi's office, Italy coordinated Sharbat Gulla's evacuation after she requested assistance in leaving the country. According to the announcement, the Italian government will now assist her in integrating into Italian society.

Gulla rose to worldwide prominence as an Afghan refugee child in 1985, when war photographer Steve McCurry's portrait of her, with her piercing green eyes, was featured on the cover of National Geographic. In 2002, McCurry tracked her down once more.

She reappeared in Pakistan in 2014, but went into hiding when officials suspected her of purchasing a false Pakistani identification card and sought her deportation. She was transported to Kabul, where she was greeted by the president at the presidential palace and given the keys to her new residence.

Following the departure of US soldiers and the Taliban takeover in August, Italy was one of many Western nations that flew hundreds of Afghans out of the country.

Draghi's office said Gulla's portrait had come to "symbolize the vicissitudes and strife of the chapter in history that Afghanistan and its people were going through at the time," in a statement announcing her visit in Rome.

It stated it had received requests from "people in civil society, particularly non-profit organizations operating in Afghanistan" in support of Gulla's request for assistance in leaving the country.

Her trip to Italy was coordinated "as part of the larger evacuation program in place for Afghan people, as well as the government's plan for their welcome and integration," according to the statement.
